Institute researchers have been contributing to the CRC for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE) since 2008, when Dr Roel Plant took on the role of Program Leader for the CRC CARE I’s social, legal, policy & economic issues program. CRC CARE is a research and development organisation established by the Australian Government in 2005 under its Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program. It works to provide cutting edge technologies in assessing, preventing and remediating contamination of soil, water and air. Dr Roel Plant had an ongoing research management role during the first months of CRC CARE II, starting 1 July 2012. He stepped down as Program 1 Leader in late November 2011. Program 1: Best Practice Policy aims to support the development of new policy frameworks and a National Guidance Framework for remediation. The program will also develop strategies and techniques that will help manage perceptions about remediation technologies and their application in the community in a positive and effective way. Dr Plant’s work with CRC CARE led to the development of the new major research project Societal Perceptions and Acceptability of Remediation Technologies (SPART), which is currently led by Dr Jason Prior. This project’s aim is to research the best way communities can be involved in the selection of remediation technology, and to provide evidence to support effective community consultation practices.
